   My guess is that they’ve built a reporting infrastructure within the energy business. So the energy companies (coal, oil, etc) may not providing the pricing data to Platts, but the energy distributors or retailers might. Another division of McGraw Hill does something similar in another industry.

   Platts keeps an eye on the energy industry and its core service includes providing the real time information as well as analysis about worldwide dealings and prices in the oil, petrochemicals, natural gas, electric and nuclear power, green energy, metals and mining mining. You can go through their products section i.e. the magazines, newsletters, reports, etc. and visit their membership section also to get a better idea. And admit during the interview that you have got a rough idea regarding the company’s business but woul like to have it known first hand.
