Lighting companies increase tech input
Energy-efficient lighting manufacturers are increasing their technological input to improve the life of new bulbs and cut prices.
European Union countries will ban the use of incandescent light bulbs in favor of energy-efficient lightings, following the United States and Australia, by the end of this decade.
China is also actively promoting the use of energy-saving lighting. It plans to sell at least 150 million highly efficient energy-saving light bulbs from 2006 to 2010.

Radar detectors and pictures of banned drugs and alcohol were some shockers at a trade show held in Dubai this week. An exhibitor at the China Sourcing Fair had displayed devices that warn motorists approaching a speed camera so they can avoid getting ‘flashed. ’ “Saving traffic fines… crystal clear voice prompts,” a poster read at the event held inside the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC). Controversial gadgets The gadgets are considered controversial in Dubai, not least because speeding kills tens of people every year. Another manufacturer showcased T-shirts with electronic screens, one of which promoted the consumption of marijuana. Some stalls had put up clothing or posters carrying famous alcohol labels, apparently unaware that blatantly promoting alcohol is banned here. The fair is also held in India, Hong Kong and Shanghai – places with lax marketing rules. Also on exhibit were mobile phones and laptops that resembled well-known brands like Nokia, Sony and Apple. They had different names but seemed like virtual clones of iPhones, Blackberries and VAIO notebooks. Even the spelling and font were near matches in some cases – Sony becoming Good Sonny, iPhone to jPhone and VAIO to VIOOO. Show organiser Global Sources, however, said it works hard to ensure exhibitors follow norms. “The shirts and images displayed were more for the purpose of showcasing the electronics, not for showcasing any particular design,” said Bill Janeri, General Manager (Middle East), Global Sources-China Sourcing Fairs. Removing the items “Nonetheless we met with the respective exhibitor and mutually agreed to remove the selected items from the show. “In the case of the radar detector poster and devices, we also met with that exhibitor and mutually agreed to remove those items. ” He added: “We strive to help Chinese manufacturers promote their products around the region but we are aware of, and sensitive to, the cultural differences that exist. And we strive to ensure the show follows any local guidelines or restrictions. ” Officials of the Dubai World Trade Centre, which manages the DICEC, could not be reached for immediate comments.
