Hi I am doing a research project for my current event class. I am doing it on Tibet and China. My question is why did China take over Tibet in the first place and why is Tibet trying to break free. I have came to a road block in my research and I am looking for good sources which will help me to write this paper. I also have to use primary source documents in my paper and I am having trouble finding them when china took over Tibet and why the Tibetans are protesting! Thanks so much!!

The Yuan dynasty was not Chinese. It was Mongol. Going by the logic of the pro-China arguments above if Tibet belongs to China then China itself belongs to Mongolia.
Base your research on an area commonly called ‘China Proper’, and the Maoist expansion into Xinkiang and Tibet. Never rely on Wikipedia or the general Google sites.
Happy researching.
Wow. You’ve gotten a lot of stock- Chinese Centric Answers. Take them all with a grain of salt.
Unfortunately, I will not touch this with a 10 foot pole as I don’t have sufficient data either to provide you with an unbiased, fact based answer.
Reaons is thus- those who claim Tibet has not always been a part of China, I would tend to believe as they are not the “invaders” claiming rights to the land. But my family is KMT Chinese and do not approve of ANYTHING the CCP does. They DO however, support the CCP claim that Tibet has always been part of CHina, yet they haven’t furnished me with proof.
One of the previous posters, who gave you a very complete answer, was giving you a good answer up to the point where he started adding in political speech. Thus, I believe his credibility to be nill as your question requires something to be answered with just what the facts are, not political opinion.
Good luck in your search.

Tibet has on and off been under Chinese influence, but nonetheless a free country. In 1959 communists conquered it. Dalai Lama the religious head of Tibet had to flee to escape possible Chinese assasination plan.
Ever since then Tibetans have been persecuted. Their religion and culture being destroyed. More and more han Chinese are migrating to Tibet in an effort to reduce the proportion of Tibetan population in their own homeland.
Free Tibet!
only a small population of tibet protest the china govennemnt. Most of Tibetan people are living peacefully in their hometown. What the government want to do is to improve the life condition there and develop the economic of Tibet.
For a serious research paper, please go to a university library and take it from there. You are not going to get credible information on such a controversial issue on the internet.

this is the government’s official website and I recommend watching Tibet: Cry of the snow lion.
The history between Tibet and China is a long and complex one. The Chinese had recognized Tibet, which initially was an empire in its own entity, since the 7th century AD when the Tibetans sent an ambassador to visit China. Several hundred years later, in the 1200s, the Mongols invaded much of China and formed the Yuan Dynasty. Tibetan rulers befriended Genghis Khan and relinquished their territory to the Mongol-conquered territory, and later became one of the thirteen provinces of China. This is when the Chinese believe that Tibet has been part of the motherland, since the 1200s-1300s to today.
Then the Yuan Dynasty dissolved and the Ming Dynasty formed. The Ming Dynasty lasted until the mid-1600s. Around this time, Tibet was in a state of turmoil and power struggle. When the Ming Dynasty perished and the Qing Dynasty formed, the Qing emperor took advantage of this turmoil, sent troops, and quickly brought Tibet back to China and formed the province of Qinghai. They quickly drew the borders of which Tibet would exist, which lasted in effect until 1910.
Between this time and 1910, the Qing Dynasty waned power and was relatively weak. The British, especially, damaged the Qing Dynasty through the Opium Wars, Taiping, and Boxer Rebellions. Then, the British invaded Tibet in 1903 and took Lhasa the following year. At this time, while China flatly claimed that Tibet was part of China, the British were already introducing means of slavery and serfdom to the territory.
Then, Republic of China fell into turmoil: the Imperialistic Japanese invaded China, and Kuomintang Party leaders and Communist Party officials entered a state of Civil war, so Tibet received little attention. In 1959, though, when China became the People’s Republic of China, it conquered and expelled the British, restored harmony and freed the serfs and slaves of Tibetans, thus beginning the movement of freedom and emancipation to all. This day, March 28, is known today as Serf’s Emancipation Day. They banished the Dalai Lama and eliminated theocracy and unfair ruling in Tibet.
Since then, Tibet has been an inseparable and unified part of the motherland. Today, the “nation” of Tibet does not exist and no foreign governments, nor the United Nations, recognize Tibet as an individual entity.
Thus concludes the current history of Tibet and China to date. Several reasons why Tibet does not want to be part of China are: they enjoy being beaten by Dalai Lama’s overseers and enjoy lives as slaves; they don’t know what “freedom” means as they already have it in China; they think that they are being discriminated when they have all the advantage over the Han Chinese; or they have lost their mind. Today, more Tibetans are in favor of being part of China that being and individual nation. The Dalai Lama is one of the few people who want Tibet to be free, but that’s because he wants to have a theocratic ruler and bring slavery back to his fellow serfs.
Hopefully this answers your question.
tibet has always been under the rule of china but china has always let them rule as they please. But since tibet seems to be making quite a lot of money through tourism, china wants to start ruling the area to increase profits. But of course, the tibetans dont like it since they have been free.
Tibet has been part of China since the ancient times. Indeed, there are few people will protest all because some one want to rule Tibet. Now the people in Tibet are living a good and happy life.
