How Can I Get A Job As A Tour Guide In China?

I am moving to china quite soon (february 1st) for the second time, and I don’t really want to teach english again. Does anyone have any information on getting jobs as tour guides or any other job ideas for the middle kingdom?

Really it isn’t easy. Thee are many Chinese that speak fluent English now and there aren’t enough jobs. Unless you speak German, French or Japanese. But I know some foreigners that work at five star hotels and get paid the same as teaching. They like it too.
the main thing people do in China is teaching English, but there are other jobs available, check out the link below, I personally help with translation of websites and recruit Americans to come and do humanitarian stuff
call the hotels for they usually arrange tours for their customers. travel agencies have package tours on Asia and that includes air fare, hotel and tours.
Hi ! There . Just saw your question regarding finding a guide job here in China . I am an English–speaking guide here . At some extent , it would be very hard for you to do a job as a guide ( If you want to take tourists and showing them around) , Because our government is very strict with people who want to make way into the tour guide industry , As you will have to pass examinations ( 6 subjects covering not only the local history of some particular city you want to stay , as well as the general history of China , customes of the minority groups,,,etc. ) Such examination is held on the first weekend of every December .
But there are some other options that you might make choice and look into it . I have no idea of which country you come from . but I presume must be a native English–speaker , There are some tour companies from Australia , UK , are always keen on getting an native English–speaker with such cultural background to lead tours around China , For instance , Group arrives in Bei Jing , and out of China in Shang Hai , and You have to arrive in Bei Jing prior to their arrival and escorting the tour groups to travel throughout the country . This is the only way that you may be able to get a job as a guide . As far as I know , There are two Australian tour agents who’s tour escort is native guys . For example, Travelindochina is one of them .
Regarding working in the hotel , It is very possible to get a job in the big international hotel chains . But please do not expect a very high payment because such hotels mostly get well–trained guys from international hotel schools .
You may come into touch with Shangri–la , or some other big hotel chains .
In our country , Travel agents are divided into two types , One is just called xxxxxx Travel service . Another is called xxxxInternational Travel service . The later one is the right place that you should go . Because CNTA( China National Tourism Administration is very very strict with who is doing the domestic market , and who else is doing the international business) . I am not sure which city you are moving into in Feb. But I notice many native English in Bei Jing who work for Travelsphere company which is a very big British travel agent . these guys are based in Bei Jing and escort tours to travel around China . some other companies such as Kuoni . and German speaking , Swedish –speaking , These markets are easier for you if you really look for it .
