How Concerned Are You About The Safety Of Products Made In China In Light Of The China Milk Scandal?
Posted by China Sourcing CommentatorFeb 26
With nearly 53,000 infants downed by melamine-contaminated dairy products, China’s milk scandal could very well be just the tip of the iceberg. Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque III announced that all milk products from China will be tested, and banned if found contaminated with melamine. But how guaranteed are we that other China-made products are safe and reliable? Share your thoughts and tell the community what you think.

Extremely concerned would be an understatement. It’s a known fact that not all products in the market have passed quality standards for safety and health issues, and we can’t ignore that a large number of them come from China, which according to many critics and agencies have a really low standard of monitoring their safety and quality- all in the pursuit of profit. Now, in my case, being in a country that has known lapses in some government agencies and corruption is pretty high – not to mention the fact the majority of the population believe that foreign goods are better- this leads to all sorts of god-know-what type of substandard products come in. Also, the fact that there has been no high profile case involving foods or products that have entered the country where those responsible have been caught and brought to justice… let us not forget the issue of low quality chinese products coming into the country and are all over Divisoria. Such is that I feel we have become the dumping ground of any substandard product that was banned in other parts of the world. And when (and believe me when I say when!) a scandal relating to a banned substandard product enters the country and our kids or adults start dying- finger pointing, senate inquiries, state witnesses and every politician jumping on the band wagon, all of this will be swept away by the next “high profile” news. For those who can afford quality, good for them. But sadly, many of us cannot- and the breeding ground for low quality stuff that are dangerous is magnified. We just have to trust our own judgement when buying products made from China or for that matter anywhere else. Knowing the origin of a certain product and its tract record is already a winning combination to avoid the same fate of those babies. But seriously, compromising quality of milk for babies?!? Little ones who have no way of choosing their path yet? All for profit? That’s really low.
I was very much concern before that. I love the white rabbit candy, then knowing it has formalin, I swore any china products food & otherwise that I wouldn’t even touch it. Seriously, I think they are taking over the world by killing people with hidden poisons (with medicines, candies, toys, now milk). What’s next? Ebola or X-virus on textile made products like shirts?
The Health Secretary or BFAD is such an idiot. It takes a massive news for them to discover the poisons rather than discovering it to themselves which I think one of their jobs.
Edit:
Now they are testing it? What for? The Chinese & other countries as well already testing all the milk products. They are spending thousands of pesos for an info or data that can be taken or bought less than the expenses and faster. (knowing that government studies results are so freaking slow and some takes years) What they should focus are other items. I believe the medicines was also infected with something (previous news), and also testing should also apply not to one- but all.
I am very much concerned about my health and from the time I’ve heard so many news about Chinese nationals being involved in many illegal acts here in our country like the news item about a Chinese businessman in Binondo manufacturing and selling fake baby wipes.
The footage showed a cockroach in the liquid used to treat the cotton wipes. And the latest about the contaminated milk. I am now convinced that if the product (whatever it is food or non-food) comes from China it must be of poor quality and would cause a life threatening situation to anyone who patronizes it. My suggestion with our government agencies is to totally ban all china products from entering our country. And also make a move to search all illegal or undocumented Chinese nationals doing business here specially in some part of Manila and have them deported.
I’d say consumer should be very wise in buying food products, buy only products from the trusted brands. I certainly dont trust and wont buy any goods that are china made.
53,000 infants is no joke. Though proper authorities, are already in the move in checking milk products coming from China and other products containing melamine, it is just right for us consumers to safeguard our family against this milk scandal. And the move is ours, though we are waiting for the result of such tests. It is just right, in my own perception to refrain in the meantime, in buying and utilizing such products. But in another area, how can we be so sure, to the food that is sold in the market or in the society, that this cooked foods, doesn’t have the ingredients of infected milks and the likes. The bottom line is, it is the duty of every individual for the safety of their family, until further notice…
The best solution to these synthetically made milk is simple. Encourage mothers to breast feed their babies. If they are busy, and not available to feed their babies, it would be best if they use my newly modified hands free breast pump device, in which they could extract their milk anywhere and any possible time without the exposure of their breast in public. All they need to do, is to use the hand free breast pump device which include a portable milk bag which serve as a container and if they’re done extracting their milk they could put it inside the portable cooler bag which could preserve the milk for later use. This was my thesis as an Industrial Designer. I thought that if it could only be possible to produce this concept and manufacture it, this could help babies drink the nutritious milk of their mother. Definitely No more mothers will rely on buying the synthetic milks from China, or any manufacturers of formulated milk.
With the high cost of living nowadays, most folks are buying cheaper stuff to cut down on costs. But there’s a price to pay for buying cheap products. Almost all of the cheap stuff out there is made in China. I don’t buy anything edible made in China. Not even toys. Almost everything coming out of China is poorly manufactured. I just read the labels more carefully now. If it’s made in China, I just won’t buy it – period.
We are all guilty of buying “by price” instead of by quality. We need to hold companies accountable for their products. Plain and simple, you have a bad product and you loose our business. No if ands or buts, period that’s it. When it comes to food and or children products, the spotlight should go on and every single product that enters this or any country should be thoroughly tested. That includes all products to be properly labeled and the content should be tested to comply with all state and federal regulations.
I guess the best defense to this sort of problem, is a stiff fine and loose of the right to sell any product here for a given time to correspond to the severity of the violation.
I am no expert ,but this seems very fair and logical to me.
All food products should be checked as they have an abusive record. They are only concerned with profit not our health. Lead in toys, plastic ingredients in baby foods, etc…
It’s only common sense that we should check all foods coming from China. We should not wait for someone to get sick before we ban their products. Stiffer penalites should be in place. Their government should be required to pay all damages, from shipping to hospitalizations as they are the ones who allow these products to be shipped, otherwise these problems will continue.
to understand this , think about this
1. all major companies went to china because the production cost is cheaper and profit margin is BIG.
2.Chinese workers are paid peanuts
3. Chinese business mentality is horrible. for them business is business first, ethics is at the bottom of the list and sometimes kicked off.
4.when you expect cheap you expect cheap in everything- cheap mentality, cheap stuff, cheap quality etc.
5.if you could get a stuff manufactured for 1 dollar and still the chinese make profit out of it, and this good is sold at 15 dollars in the outside world, something sucks here.. who is unethical. chinese or the people using chinese to make profit. in Business it is all about profits- remember.
6.The chinese problems wont stop because-for profit you have to use cheaper stuff, for profit you have to pay less, and for profit the only way is use third world countries or economically weak countries .
7. because of china business the world companies have profited, because of profit of world companies the governments have profited. i said Business is all about profits, so will the government go against china? answer is NO.
so chinese product safety? think twice.
Im with utmost concern because infants health and development are directly affected by these tainted milk which could cause long term illness. There is no 100% guarantee that China made products are safe & reliable. Not only milk but other China-made food products, should also be tested. DTI & other health agency should conduct an accurate, fast, and responsive test, but do they have the capability to do so?
Its very sad this happened, it will take a very long time before the consumers will gain their trust in China made products.
A side effect is that even the good products from China are banned.
In the mean while testing the products its the only way to guarantee their safety. Yes this will take time and effort and in the mean time Government’s have to think about new laws to prevent this of happening again.
Looking back at Belgium with their dioxin scandal and Britain with the BSE. I think their governments made the right discussions.
i always like to ad a little youtube with my answers,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JBQPCHHK…
Truthfully, i think we have gone overly concerned… here where i am in singapore, yes we are affected by the contamination, we have products getting recalled off the shelf in the supermarts due to the discovery of traces of melamine in them. yes, we are affected, we may have drunk some of the milk products, eaten some of the biscuits made from such tainted milk powder. by this has gone a little overboard here, i think, that every thing that we eat now, or even buy, we would look at where it comes from, whether it contains milk powder, etc., its like… a little case of ????, (seldom seen, but big hoo haa when discovered), and like or reaction is like blown out of proportion… and i am guilty of that too…
I am really concerned because were dealing with lives of infants and people in general here. If people wouldn’t be aware of this issue, they might be included to those who are sick and infected. The government should do something about it quick because this is something you just cant play safe with. Extensive awareness should be guaranteed. For us to be safe i believe we should just stop patronizing china made dairy products.
Personally, whatever the result of all these testing may be, I will think twice about buying (mush less eating) Chinese products again. The country obviously has very lax, if not non-existent, quality controls. A few months ago, it was revealed that Chinese-made toys were laden with excessive amounts of lead paint that can cause brain damage in children. Weeks later, candies, cookies and other Chinese food imports were found to contain formaldehyde, a cancer-causing substance popularly known as formalin. And now, it’s melamine in milk. It scares me to think what we’ll discover next.
I try to be civil and not resort to stereotyping against the chinese people as I do enjoy their company and hospitality. Reading through the trail of responses, there is a strong sense of anger and distrust on the so called “Made-in-China” brand. Though i could share the same sentiments, I am leased surprised that such irresponsible acts could be done by people to … fellow people. I think the Chinese government should show the world that these perverted acts are meted the same heinous punishment.
I also think that the Arroyo administration should pay attention to public health in the areas of implementing policies to ensure that all imported food are sampled and tested regardless of origin and manufacturer. Considering that for every 10 pesos that we spent on food that we eat.. at least 3 pesos (input/output VAT, wtax, etc.) goes to the government. With trillions of pesos in budget, i question why the likes of BFAD gets so meager allocation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Php200M C5 extension “inserted” budget is much bigger than what BFAD is currently getting.
Just an opinion…
First of all, I am just wondering why china keep on producing products that are detrimental to health…do they intentionally doing this ? are they planning to make the whole population die and conquer the whole world with chinese citizenry the only human beings living in this planet? sounds crazy but sometimes crazy ideas are meant to be. Best is , we should be careful in buying products from china, cheap commodities are not a guarantee of intelligent buys, most of the time you will be spending more once consequences comes in the way. Philippine authorities must be on alert on any chinese merchandise getting into the philippine territory…
Think about it, if you are a businessman, will you intentionally put something in your product that will eventually be discovered and will cost your whole business to go down. This is done by other people who are afraid of this big race to be economically powerful. Alright if we ban their products for now without considering what will happen to the fate of this people. What will you feel if the whole world condemn all products of the Philippines? Someone is manipulating the whole scheme, so before we judge these Chinese, we have to think deeper and we must not believe everything that we read. Sorry but I haven’t heard any explanations from this accusations. But I am sure they know the gravity of the situation regarding the future of their economy and the well being of their people. And they are surely looking for solutions and going after the culprit. If ever they do discover something, I hope they tell it to the world so that we will know the real perpetrators whoever they are. Chinese people are good businessmen and just like all of us they just want to exist, give them a chance to recover from this.
I think all milk products contains a chemical melamine, maybe this is use as a preservative, just like sodium benzoate found in all food products that’s why milk have a longer shelf life and come to think how liquid milk turn to powder how to they do it then. How the Chinese farmers know about melamine Who thought them to mix melamine in milk ? are their supervise by the company buying their milk or they just forgot how much dosage of melamine to use. why so many adult people
are lactose intolerance or should I say melamine intolerance. Those babies born in the 80′s and above, many have symptoms of U.T. I. what are the causes?????? genetics or food they eat and drink.
I am very much worried about this thing happening to China products especially food products including milk. Since China is so huge and they control everything because of price issue, this abuse will just happen, and happen again. There is no strong and stricter control on chinese products. So there are human collateral damage before a bad thing is discovered.
The sad fact that people were willing to poison innocent babies in their own country. So I am sure that other things are highly likely to be contaminated as well. Here in Australia sweets are being tested for possible melamine and across Europe biscuits are being tested (All these items were imported from China).I do not trust that imported products would be safe. This is a serious issue because we are no longer safe. Our entertainment products, toys, consumables, kitchen utensils, pencils, pens, etc could all be potential killers. Its all to do with saving money and unfortunately money talks!!!
Some of the food I eat have the “made in China” label. Some of my gadgets have the “made in China” label. I will try to check if I have clothes made in China. Yes, I am quite concerned about all this.
The thing is, despite that nation’s reputation for hellish treatment of its production labor force and haphazard quality control of products, I am having quite a hard time believing that this is entirely their fault. No nation would want to be known as exporting contaminated products. A problem of this magnitude would not have escaped inspection even in China.. That is what I think.. But then, I hear in the news that even their own population got infected by these contaminated products..
It is just strange, since these kinds of news began to intensify just when China was making efforts to prevent these problems.. When China was gearing up to become an economic superpower.. When China was opening up to the world.. Suddenly, almost all their products from food, textile, and electronics were known to have harmful materials.. Yes, I know this has been the news even when I was a kid.. But now, it seemed to have intensified..
If I had a child, I would not want him/her to consume these products.. and I bet any Chinese would think the same way with regards to their children’s welfare..
If I look at it at face value, I will blame it on the Chinese government.. But then, sojmething just does not feel right about it.. I think there is something we are not seeing…
It’s really hard to comprehend why China keeps on producing products which are detrimental to health, and affecting not only the people across countries that buy their products but also their own people. Atleast for the Philippines, I wish our government to have better screening of products that are coming in to the country and let not testing of products be made after they have found out that there are already victims. If only everyone could care about each other’s welfare first before their own pockets…. =(
I guess BFAD should not only test the products but banned the china made milk. i don’t think it’s not necessary if they are contaminated or not. We shouldn’t buy those product we don’t even understand what’s the container says or what are the content of this product.
I guess filipino people should secure the value there baby’s health. Don’t dare to buy products that you don’t understand
VERY CONCERNED. PARDON MY STATEMENT BUT OUR COUNTRY IS A DUMPING GROUND FOR ALMOST ALL UNCERTAIN, UNVERIFIED, ILLEGAL WARES, OR WHATEVER. AND WE ALL KNOW THAT. BESIDES WE LACK THE MANPOWER, THE SOPHISTICATED EQUIPMENTS AND EVEN COMPLETE POLICE WORKS TO HANDLE THIS MILK DANGER (SCANDAL) ISSUE. PERHAPS OUR LACK OF INFORMATION AND VIGILANCE WILL ONE DAY DO US IN. I CAN ONLY PRAY THAT UNSCRUPULOUS AND WILY MONEY ORIENTED BUSINESSMEN (SORRY) WONT TAKE TOO MUCH ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY IGNORANT AND UNKNOWING BUYERS OR WE WILL ALSO END UP IN THE STATISTICS JUST LIKE THAT OF CHINA. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US. AND MAY WE KEEP ON SURVIVING DESPITE ALL THESE CALAMITIES THROWN INTO OUR LAPS.-elensantua, cagayan de oro
I am enraged by the incident, but am not at all worried. As a consumer it is easy for me to do my part and act. What Chinese dairy producers did now makes me doubt all food items that come from the continent. And because of that, its going to take an awfully long time for Chinese producers to get my confidence in their products back.
I hope its not just me because together we can send a very clear message to all those concerned: be very careful when you use the free market as a laboratory for products and business models. One mistake and you could be punished forever!
I surely hope that all milk products are recalled back to China especially since my daughter is accompanying my wife to the Phillip-pines to visit her parents. It is a shame that tainted milk products are exported to other countries without being checked appropriately.I feel bad for the innocent children who died and for the ones suffering from poisoning
Unfortunately, here in the West, we like Chinese products because they are cheap. We just ignore the fact that theses products have most likely been produced in a sweatshop and may be harmful to our health. Until we start thinking with our consciences rather than our wallets, that’s not likely to change anytime soon.
it is very alarming considering that the chinese gov’t themselves have to band their products. what did the philippine gov’t do about it? isn’t it that it has to be tested even before hand. it just simply say that our poor country has very insensitive and worthless gov’t. offhand, before these has to reach market place, it has to have clearance from the philippine gov’t.
My answer comes in a question forms, do we have a global quality control of all products on earth? I am concerned with what human being are eating now. Can ISO do the random checking of all processed and non processed foods? Let us preserve next generations in the glory of God! Shalom!
PS if melamine is harmful do not use it let us innovate other non carcinogenic substance.
Thanks for that possibility to give some comments.
We are also drinking fresh milk and powder milk and had also contact do milk products from china. We like to know. which companies are involved, because we got informations that they were in contact to compaies in australia too.
I am highly concerned about the safety of almost all products from China. It is solely about making money, and if it costs a few lives, oh well. I believe China has a ” so what ” attitude if so many thousand out of whatever number die. It’s just part of doing ” business” to them.
