How Many Children Are You Allowed To Have In China?
Posted by China Sourcing CommentatorMar 1
In the media/internet it says that you are only allowed to have 1 child, but when i went to Shenzhen for a day i saw many couples with either 2 or 3 children and someone who i was staying with who is English but has lived in Hong Kong for nearly 20 years and goes over to China every few weeks says that it is normal.
So can someone shed some light on this please.

By law, they are only allowed to have one. If they have more than one, they are fined but other than that no action is taken. However, if they are caught in a second pregnancy, they may be forced to have an abortion. Finally, if they are part of a minority population, like Tibetans, they are exempt from the one-child law and allowed to have as many as they want. Perhaps the families you saw in Shenzhen were minorities? If not, they probably got pregnant in secret, then opted to pay the fine after giving birth.
1 child policy, or for that matter any law in china is for poor people. The rich with connections in CPC flaunt all laws at will.
china still has the one child policy, you can have more but will not have any state assistance (meaning you would have to pay for the extra children’s medical, schooling, etc…when for everyone else it is already provided), in some cases you may be fined as well. Most of the population in China cannot afford the expenses that come along with a second child so therefore it doesnt create much of a population issue. There of course are exceptions to the rule, for instance if you are a farmer and your first born child is a female, you are then allowed to have a second child in hopes of a boy that can carry on the family name and farm. In Chinese culture, the boy is very important. He will carry on the family name and remain in the family after marrying. If you have a female, they will marry out of the family and become of no use to the family in the long term.
Yes you are technically only allowed one. I live in china but some people have two or more.
1. Rich people who can afford the fine
2. Farmers are allowed as many as they want.
3. Ethnic minorites and two only children are allowed to have two children
4. Lots of people have more than two if they live outside the big cities, if you don’t register the birth or get caught by the police when pregnant then you can keep having kids. It’s far too difficult for the police to enforce the law.
Ever since the 1980s, each person/couple can only have one child. So, if two people are marrying for the second time, and they both had a child from a previous marriage, then they can’t have another one out of their union. But if, say, the woman’s never had a child before, then they are allowed to have one.
There are many ways to get out it, though:
1) You don’t work for the government — if you work for a government-funded company, you will get fired and fined.
2) Lots of businessmen/women have 2 kids because they can afford the fine.
3) People of ethnic minorities get a “pass” because they live so “out there” and it’s hard to control.
4) Rural peasants — same reason as above
You should know that most Chinese don’t *want* more than one. This way, they can invest all their resources (including mental care) into one child. It’s looked down upon in the cities to have more than one child… because only peasants have 1+. It’s also really bad to be seen with an older sister and a younger brother… because that shows that the parents aren’t satisfied with a girl.
People might think that it’s “cruel” to regulate birth… but think about it… China has 1.3 billion people already. America’s population’s growing like crazy… and believe it or not, someday Americans will get some kind of regulation, too.
Oh yeah, when single-children marry, they have have 2. So this ends up being a skip-generation thing. I am an only child, and if I marry another only-child, we can have 2 kids.
Hope this helps!
You are allowed to have as many children as you like.
However the government will only pay for the education of a set amount of those children you have, these depends on if the parents where single children, if there an ethnic minority, do they live in Beijing. Etc.
If you have more than the limit the government just fines you and takes away there grants. The number of grants the government will pay for are between 1 and 5 depending on factors.
yes it’s true to have only 1 child only in China but to keep down the population. My Aunt’s and Uncle’s (who are indeed all chinese) have stuck to this “1 child only rule” but except a few. My Mum and Dad (also Chinese) says that if you have more than 1 child you pay more tax (was it tax?). Luckily my parents no longer live in China and have me and my 2 sisters (leaving me in the middle!
The government still encourages people to have only one baby, but citizens who live in the big cities, like Shanghai,Shenzhen and some other places, especially the high-educated group, are allowed to have one more baby, but as far as I know, they seem to be unwilling to have another baby, or even “a baby”. I am Chinese, and hope it helps
Money speaks in China. You can buy everything including the right to have more child than set quota. If you are rich or powerful, you enjoy many, many privileges beyond law and regulation. Even if you kill a person, money can change you death sentence.
Infinite. My father’s mother had 3 boys including my father and 1 daughter. My mother’s mother had 2 daughters.
If you are high middle-class like my mother’s and father’s side and can afford the fine, it’s legal to have this many children.
for Mainland the rule is “one child per family”
but
there are several exceptions
for instance
if the twins were born, none of them will be killed of course
or
for national minorities (those who are not Han)
or
the families from undeveloped areas
or
some other cases, regulated especially
it 1 and the government of china pay for everything for the child and if u have more then 1 they stop the payments of the first child and do not pay for the other child/ children either, hope this helped
it is my belief that there is a one child program, but how hardly this is enforced is questionable, especially in rural areas. there is a fine if you have more than 1 child,
1
think only 2
not sure
jane
one only!!
two or more…?then they have to pay the fine..
seriously..been there
The general law enforces the “one-child policy,” which allows a couple to have 1 child. However, it is increasingly common to see families with more than one child, because not only can more families begin to afford the expenses and fines related to having a second or third child, there are also a number of exceptions to the rule:
1. Exemptions in Rural Areas
Many rural areas often allow more than one child, especially if the first child is disable or female, since the family may need help the physical labor of farming.
2. Exemptions of Minorities
In 2002, the government decided to apply the one-child policy only to ethnic Han Chinese. Around 90% of the population of China is of Han ethnicity, and the 56 minorities are exempt from the one-child restrictions. In the case of mixed households, where one parent is a minority and one parent is Han, the couple may also be allowed to have additional children. (Note that a number of minority groups live in the southern provinces near Hong Kong, so this particular exemption may have strongly influenced your friend’s experience.)
3. Exemption for Two “One-Child” Children
Many areas have fairly recently adopted an exemption that allows a couple to have two children as long as both parents came from single-child households themselves. As the children of the “One-Child” generations grow up, this is quickly becoming one of the most common exemptions.
4. Financial Ability
The Chinese government does not kill additional children or force abortions, so the policy is enforced by fines and withholding of government support. As China moves towards a more capitalistic economy, the number of wealthy citizens rises, and more people can afford the financial strain of opting for a second child.
you can usually only have 2 i think but some areas they let you have more or you have to ask for special permission
Official it is only 1 child. More are tolerated but they have problems to go to school and get education. Stupid country, I rather stay here.
it used to be one but i heard that they changed it so i think it is as many as you want now.
infinite
i heard that they could only have one … if they had more then the child would be taken from them !
I think no more than two children.
Not sure.
Bye
