In terms of national economics a new major war simply gives the government the excuse for more borrowing and the printing of more money. That many of the military produce that results is lost is of no relevance.
After the war has passed (and we are still surviving) the effect is simply to make our currency of less value compared to other countries who have not participated in similar economic changes.
Thus the economy during a war will result in less for everyone and after it is over the prices will be higher and the condition require a lot more hard work to return them to pre-war conditions.
Not really unless you think investment in military activities adds more value to the economy than does the private investment it would displace. A war today with a major country would be over mighty quickly anyway, and probably not leave much behind.
It would reduce both the standard of living and the unemployment rate. We could accomplish the same thing if we hired unemployed people to dig holes and fill them up again and that would not kill any people.
