China's new leader Dengxiaoping opened China to foreign investment in the 1980s which is why now everything is made in China and why China has a economic growth rate of 13%/year, the largest economic growth rate in the world.

I would read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_…
Another theory is that and I'm saying thats its a theory that helped pushed Chinas reforms is the gulf war.
For sometime there have been USA trade embargoes which have blocked China's grow, which was lifted in 1969 until 1989 then the protests in Beijing broke out and caused further economic sanctions. Then the gulf war broke out in broke out in 1990 . (As taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War)
The People's Republic of China (whose army used military equipment similar to the Iraqi army) was surprised at the performance of American technology on the battlefield. The swiftness of the coalition victory resulted in an overall change in Chinese military thinking and began a movement to technologically modernize the People's Liberation Army.)
For them to be able to modernize the army they would need huge amounts of resources, capital and the technology to be able do so. So they would have to drop these embargos, they did this by making China a more socially reformed place and giving more rights to the people, diplomacy so that foreign investigators want to invest money in China. This couple with the low cost of things and the high dollar to rmb exchange rate has greatly increase Chinas exports and increase the number of foreign investigators in China. In turn this leads to more money flowing through the Chinese treasury (China now has the highest amount of foreign currently in the world), which can be reinvested in modernising there army and also at the same same modernising there country.
The problem is how long will it last for, given that the dollar to rmb rate is falling and that inflation is also rising, plus rising the cost of goods. It is also in completion with the likes of India such also products goods at low cost and is also up and becoming.

China really started economic reforms back in the 50's when the failure of collective farming resulted in mass death. The farmers had little incentive to grow a bountiful crop. Thus they became the first capitalists in China and crop yields went up significantly and food became cheap and plentiful. There were some major hurdles after that, like the cultural revolution, one of Mao's brain child's that was a huge clusterphuk that even the Chinese say was a disaster. That is one of the reasons Mao is considered, officially, 70% good and 30% bad.
China started real economic reforms on the day Mao died. Economic free trade zones were set up where people could go into business. Now China is one huge capitalistic system and is no more communist then my big toe is a hard drive. They are communist in name only.
There are several sources, but a good one is http://www.china.org.cn and do some serious exploring of the site. It explains their government and economic system plus news from their perspective.
Hope this helps.
