It says Exxon-Mobil committed $600 million toward fuel from algae. Another oil company, British Petroleum, is one of the largest manufacturers of solar panels. It doesn’t upset me one bit that oil companies are diversifying into other forms of energy. I hope they make lots of money from it because if it isn’t profitable they will stop and we will continue depending on foreign oil.

Why would I be upset if a new renewable energy source is discovered and is put into use.Somebody will make money off it and I have no problem with it being a major oil company.I work in the oilfields of Alberta and know firsthand how much they support the local towns and charities here.Whether it is contributing to to local charities or donating fire equipment to small towns or providing support for local events,they are often involved and much of what they do is not published.They work hard to have good relations with there neighbors and I think they get far too little credit for all they do.
No I would not. I would love for a new renewable energy source to be open and fully ready to hit mainstream. Maybe only possible for maybe an oil company to afford being able to allow the changes to take place over a whole nation. Only thing is, it better be cheap because for the oil industry to even look at it it has to have a better profit margin than oil.

the only way splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen will be viable is if we have a large amount of electricity from green sources like orbital solar/wind/nuclear. it takes a lot of energy to split large amounts of water
No, I think that renewable energy is important and it doesn’t matter who is selling it, as long as it is available and accessible.
You assume it’s not already here. The real question is, how long will the oil companies keep it under our noses? They have too much money to lose.
Businesses are not in business to lose money. If they succeed, that is good for all of us. If they provide a product or service that benefits mankind, why shouldn’t they make money?
Depends on weather I own stock in that company or their competition.
