Due to its recent measures in moving towards a free-market economy, China’s economy is growing rapidly. More and more people can afford to buy cars (but the cities weren’t built with any parking). While the economy is growing so quickly, China is going to need some quick reform to deal with the growth, and it will be interesting to see how the current government confronts a plethora of problems that will arise in the coming years.
Over 90% of current university students have no brother or sister, only-children due to the child-bearing law. A little scary, actually. They consider Taiwan to be part of China and will get angry to hear you refer to it as a country. Many people still retain animosity towards Japan.
The society still retains much of its traditional culture, while maintaining a healthy obsession with western life. Once, the most removed country from Western culture, as China grows it continues to become more and more Westernized. Every single student studies English for at least 6 years (and learns to fire a rifle during military training).
While it used to be only a few rich and billions of poor, China now has a big middle class. China’s current society seems much like America in the 1980s. More and more people have money and love to flaunt it. Since electronics prices are on par with the West, owning them is a big status symbol. The growing middle class loves expensive cell phones, Nike, KFC, Budweiser, the NBA, and Disney. I know a kid with a $900 cell phone who must still handwash his clothes. This duality is China today.
Your question is pretty broad. Let me know if you want more specifics. Sorry I don’t know anything about India.
